Horgan bags POTM for May

Dundalk winger Daryl Horgan has been named the SSE Airtricity/Soccer Writers’ Association of Ireland Player of the Month for May.

It is the first time that Horgan has won the monthly award which was presented to him today by Jillian Saunders from SSE Airtricity.

The 21-year-old midfielder bagged three goals during May as Dundalk went into the mid-season break as league leaders.

Horgan’s stand out performances for Stephen Kenny’s side saw him top the voting among SWAI members.

“I’m delighted to pick up the award, it’s an honour,” said Horgan. “We have been playing great lately. I’m delighted with how we bounced back after the Setanta Cup final defeat to Sligo Rovers.

“We were where we wanted to be going into the break, top of the league, and that is where we want to stay.”

Dundalk return to action with a trip to the Brandywell to take on Derry City on Friday night and Horgan insists the Lilywhites are raring to get going again.

“The break was good, hopefully it doesn’t slow our momentum. I managed to get away for a few days to recharge the batteries,” he explained.

“We have some really tough games coming up away from home starting with Derry City and then Shamrock Rovers.

“With being in Europe, it’s going to be very tricky to juggle all the games. I think we have the squad to cope though.

“I don’t really have any personal goals to fulfill for the end of the season. As long as I’m doing my job for the team and we continue to play well then I’ll be delighted. It’s an exciting time.”

In winning the award, Horgan beat off competition from team-mate Chris Shields who finished second. St Pat’s pair Conan Byrne and Christy Fagan were joint third.
