Dundalk midfielder Robbie Benson has been named the SSE Airtricity/Soccer Writers’ Association of Ireland Player of the Month for August.
It is the first time that Benson has won the monthly award which was presented to him today in Oriel Park.
Dundalk’s incredible European run continued throughout August and Benson gave them a real chance of knocking out Legia Warsaw in the play-off in Poland with a stunning volley before Legia came back to equalise.
Benson admits the goal, and now this award, have made it a special month.
“It’s nice to win it. It’s good recognition not just for me but for the club too,” said Benson.
“I think the European run captured the imagination of the country and that helped. It’s four different players in the squad now who have won this award this year.
“That goal is probably the highlight of my career so far. I was telling the lads in training before that I was hitting the ball sweetly and I felt I was going to score. I think they just laughed it off though!”
The Lilywhites lost two of their three league games in August but have bounced back with three straight wins.
Benson has been a key reason for that and he knows, even with a seven-point gap over Cork City, it will not be easy to make it three titles in a row.
“It’s all about grinding out results now,” explained Benson.
“We’ve three wins from our last three games in the league but they have all been close games.
“We’ve won them all by a single goal. We know that nothing is going to be easy for us from now until the end of the season.”
Benson won the award ahead of Dylan Connolly of Bray Wanderers, who was second, and Sligo Rovers star Raff Cretaro who finished third.
