Cork City midfielder Greg Bolger has been named the SSE Airtricity/Soccer Writers’ Association of Ireland Player of the Month for June.
Bolger was instrumental in Cork beating title rivals Dundalk before the summer break and then helped City beat Linfield at Windsor Park in the Europa League. The Player of the Month trophy was today presented by Cork City’s coach John Cotter.
It is Bolger’s first time named Player of the Month and the first award won by the Leesiders since Mark O’Sullivan was selected in June 2014.
Bolger said: “This is my first win. It’s not often a midfielder wins it so it does mean a lot.
“The players who score the goals and grab the headlines get the plaudits and probably get this award more so it’s nice to win it.
“The season has been good so far but we’re probably a bit disappointed as we beat Dundalk twice and we’re still three points behind them. That’s credit to them.
“We really need them dropping points and us picking up wins and see where it takes us. Hopefully it’s good enough at the end of the year. We’ll be fighting to the end either way.”
Before that, Cork have Europa League action as they face Swedish outfit BK Hacken with Bolger hoping to shake off an ankle problem in time to play in Thursday’s first leg in Gothenburg.
“I’ve been getting treatment every day for the last two weeks. The medical team here are top notch.
“Hopefully I’m right for Thursday. These are the games you want to play in, better opposition than we’re probably used to playing in the league.
“I watched a few of their clips and they look decent, they’ve a few internationals.
“We’ll focus on the next two weeks in Europe and hopefully we can come out on the good side of the result and progress. But it’s going to be tough.”
Bolger, who was third in the voting for the May Player of the Month award won by Daryl Horgan, fended off competition in June from Finn Harps’ Seán Houston and City teammate Stephen Dooley.
