As part of our efforts to highlight the best coverage of Irish football, this series will focus on video clips on both domestic and international features. First up is ‘Sparky’.
A former England youth international, Mark Rutherford first arrived in the League of Ireland in 1991 when he signed for Shelbourne. Nobody knew it then, least of all ‘Sparky’ himself, but he would go on to become a Reds legend, playing over 200 times for them.
A skillful winger with an infectious personality off the pitch, he was welcomed in by the Shels fans and those at Bohemians, Shamrock Rovers, St Patrick’s Athletic and Longford Town during his spells with those respective clubs.
Still based in Dublin, the three-time league winner opens up on his career, making the move from England, and his ties with Shels in this excellent short video, which was made by the 1895 Trust.
