Dundalk midfielder Daryl Horgan has been named the SSE Airtricity/Soccer Writers’ Association of Ireland Player of the Month for September.

It is the fourth time that Horgan has won the monthly award which was presented to him today by Anne McAreavey from SSE Airtricity.

Four members of Stephen Kenny’s squad, including Horgan, have now won an award this season and the Galway man was thrilled to come out on top in the voting. “It’s great to win another one,” insisted Horgan.

“Ronan Finn, Robbie Benson and David McMillan have won one this season too. It just shows how well we’re doing as a team.”

Dundalk hold a four point lead at the top of the table after their 2-1 victory over Cork City on Tuesday night.

But winger Horgan insists there is a long way to go with five league games remaining.

“We have some very tough games left,” explained Horgan.“It’s basically five cup finals. We have Shamrock Rovers up next and we know that won’t be easy because they need a win to guarantee Europe.

“We have a lot of games coming up but as a player, you just want to play in every game.

“It was difficult at the start balancing Europe with our domestic games, but once you get used to it it’s fine.”

There has been talk of Horgan being called up to the Ireland squad by manager Martin O’Neill after his terrific run of form, but for the moment he is just concentrating on Dundalk.

“There has been a lot of talk but that’s all it is,” added Horgan “It’s been a good year so far. But I’m quite confident that Martin O’Neill is looking at a few players in the league, not only me.

“There is a lot of quality throughout the league but you never know.”

Horgan won the award ahead of Sean Maguire of Cork City, who was second, and Bray Wanderers’ Ger Pender who finished third.
